Here's a boring scene-related public announcment that you should skip if you don't know me: here's the charges I'm faced with and I just want to answer them publically. >the only thing i've heard anyone say >about the way you book shows is that the >sames ones play all the time and there >isn't really that much diversity >musically (ie -- this bike is a pipe bomb >and the devil is electric play alot and >all we ever hear is folk and punk rock >and patrick's band(s)). and that maybe >you don't think of what others would >like to hear (ie-the selfishness >comment). The number one thing you have to understand is that I can only book based on the bands that I get contacted by. First off, a lot get eliminated because they need shows on the weekdays and I can't generally do that. second, I'll eliminate bands if I go to their webpage and see rascist, sexist, or really idiotic lyrics. Other than that, I'm mostly open to bands that contact me. I get a couple emails a week during the year and maybe ten a week during the summer from bands that want to play here, and I always take the time to read what they have to say, visit their webpage, and email them back. That's a lot more than most promoters do these days, and trust me I know because I've run into a million promoters who don't listen to little bands. Anyway, point I was trying to make is that I can only work with what I have. If different varieties of bands don't ask me about shows then I can't book them. Personally I thought Convocation Of, Love Light Shine, and Bergen Even were pretty diverse acts. While I value variety, you've also got to understand that we are a small punk venue. Alternative, Dance, Hip Hop, Heavy Rock, and all other styles of music don't usually adhere to the same DIY values I'm going for here, and they probably aren't that down with playing a dirty alley with minimal PA for mediocre money. But if you find at band that is willing, let me know. I'm not being sarcastic. I've talked to Biddy Biddy Biddy, Small Brown Bike, Never Cry Wolf (Pedro the lion-ish), and Miles From Somewhere (kay's moog-weezerish band) about playing here soon. I'm also hoping to have 238(christian emo) through here this year (I've talked to Chris about it). I'll try to get asschapel down here for some insane metal fun, and I just asked The People's War (super fast super political hardcore) to play at the upcoming country show. I still want to get Lucero to play here pretty badly, and I've talked to them about it, but we'll just see how it goes. They are growing pretty fast and I don't know if I can pay them what they are used to. maybe though. I just talked to Cey about doing a show down here with Pezz, Kill Devil Hills, and maybe hopefully a return of High Strung. ps. the reason they haven't played down here in so long is not because I don't want them to. They stopped playing shows anywhere, period. I guess that's about all I have in the works. If some diverse bands ask me to play here then I definately will let them, but most of the emails and cds I get are from pop punk bands. The reason This Bike is a Pipe bomb play here so much is because they tour constantly, and if they ask me for a show I book it for them. I don't call them and ask them to come play here all the time, but they are my friends, and if you guys are sick of seeing them then leave and I'll stay for their show. It seems like they play so often becuase we don't have a lot of shows. We don't have a lot of shows because I don't want to be one of those clubs that books a ton of shows that no one comes to. ie. tree of woe, 1297 madison, etc. Plus, every time we have a show my dad and I both miss a lot of working time getting ready, and I have to do a day or two of cleaning up afterward. It's a lot of work. If you want to see me book a band, TELL ME! ONCE (!!!) someone (Kay) asked me to book a show for Beards Not Beers here and I didn't follow through with it, and I still feel kind of bad about it. Other than that I can't remember when someone actually asked me about a band they wanted me to book (other than high strung and like I said I can't do much about that) I don't usually have a habit of spitting in people's faces, so if you ask me about a band you want to see, I'll seriously do my best to get them unless I really really hate them. It's that easy. Actually, it would be a lot easier for you to do that than to talk about me behind my back and imply that I am doing this for selfish reasons. I have never made any money doing this. Actually I have spent tons of my own money, whether it be from spending $5-20 on every show to copy flyers to buying food and drinks to feed the bands AND ALL MY FRIENDS AT PARTIES, to buying new mics and cords for the P.A. It's been a ton of work (and I haven't done it all, lots of people have helped especially including my dad, my mom, richard, patrick, emile, rj and lexie among lots of others). I don't do this for selfish reasons. I don't do it to book shows for one reason, you guys are sick of us playing and we are too so that wouldn't make sense. I don't do it to see the bands, I could go see any of the bands playing here somewhere else and it would be a lot less work on my part. I only do it because I think that someone will still enjoy it and think it was worthwhile. I think that some small touring band that has been playing shitty or no shows all tour to 5 people will really really appreciate having a decent show even if it is in mississippi. Mostly I think some new kids will find the show and we'll make new friends. That's all. I don't want to make myself sound like some hero "Whoa look at me I'm ginger and I save the scene mwhaha!". Obviously the shows wouldn't be shit if you people didn't continue to come to them year after year which is really crazy to me. I would think someone would get sick of it sometime. Also, they wouldn't be any fun if you people weren't so friendly and loving and funny. (and trust me they are fun by comparison, I've been to some boring ass, mean shows in other states). To summarize for the millionith time, if you have a suggestion, talk to me. If you want to see a band play here, talk to me. If you want to see something new, start a band that's different and I will give you a show the minute you ask for one. Just please don't talk shit behind my back when all I do is think about what I could do to make this a better venue for you guys. love ginger ps. I want to give a big shout out to anyone that has ever helped pass out flyers and spread the word for the shows too. That helps so much. pss. sorry I'm not concise.
